Lockport Community Information

The city of Lockport lies in the Des Plaines River Valley. Prior to the arrival of white explorers and settlers, the Miami and Potawatomi Native Americans populated this area. The richest portion of Lockport’s history, however, is interwoven with the canal history of the 19th century. The Illinois and Michigan Canal was the first navigable link to the Mississippi River and is credited with making the growth of Chicago possible.

This bygone era is still visible in structures standing today, such as the Gaylord Building, originally an 1838 warehouse. Another historic Lockport building is the Norton Building, a stone structure built by the Norton family in 1850 as part of its complex of mills along the canal. The city also boasts a historic district, which is part of the 120-mile long Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor.

Lockport is not all historical facts and sites, however. There are plenty of other attractions and amenities to be found in this growing community. The Lockport Township Park District offers a variety of facilities including an 18-hole golf course and tennis courts. The district also sponsors hundreds of recreational programs such as “Lots for Tots Pre-School” and several senior clubs. The district also maintains the Gladys Fox Museum, Fairmont Community Center, Caneva Performing Arts Center and Prairie Room Banquet Facility.

Lockport’s educational and employment opportunities are top-notch. Many quality schools are located in the area, such as Kevin Grove, Jr. High School or Goodings Grove School. Post-high school education is provided by nearby Lewis University, St. Francis University and Joliet Junior College. Of course, plenty of excellent institutions are located in Chicago, such as the University of Chicago and Northwestern University. Those who have completed their educations will find numerous major employers in the Lockport community, including Citgo, Panduit Corporation, Freedom Imaging Systems, Sonoco Plasti-Drum and Walco Tool.

Lockport also benefits from its proximity to Chicago. Many workers commute to the Windy City by way of public transportation or the nearby interstates. Chicago also offers some of the best cuisine, entertainment, shopping and sightseeing in the world. The suburb of Lockport will offer you everything you have ever dreamed of in a community and more!
